The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) is currently running a Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) course with a module on Countering Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) in Sri Lanka.
This course, supported by two Danish Navy IED experts, is the very first VBSS course with a focus on C-IED components.
In addition to lessons and tests delivered as part of a regular course, including ladder climbing techniques and swimming assessments, the 24 Sri Lankan MLE personnel are being trained on several essential C-IED-related tasks, including definitions, different types of IEDs, and potential indicators and placements on a vessel.
This activity is funded by the European Union.
